About 94 percent of the U.S. shrimp supply is imported, and the majority of it is farmed. "Farming can be done responsibly, but when it's not, bacteria and disease can thrive. Antibiotics may seem like a fix, but we don't think so, and they're illegal for use in imported shrimp," said Urvashi Rangan, Ph.D., the director of Consumer Reports' Food Safety and Sustainability Center. Scientists analyzed 342 packages of frozen shrimp, farmed and wild, raw and cooked. The shrimp was purchased in supermarkets in 27 cities across the country. Overall, 60 percent of the raw shrimp samples tested positive for bacteria, so safe preparation is very important. And 11 samples, or about five percent of imported, raw, farmed shrimp, had antibiotic residues.

CymaBay Therapeutics Announces U.S. Orphan Drug Designation for MBX-8025 in Severe Hypertriglyceridemia - Yahoo Finance

A new study, led by WVU psychology professor Steven Kinsey, combines existing over the counter medicines (such as Aleve and Tylenol) and experimental drugs in smaller doses to see if they work better together than either drug alone. We want to provide better mobility than other existing pain medicines offer, Kinsey said. We want to reduce pain, but more than that, we want to restore peoples function. West Virginia University has been awarded $395,120 from the National Institutes of Health to help find new methods of relief for an affliction that is the leading cause of disability in the United States. So far, Kinsey said, promising laboratory work with mouse subjects has shown that the mice have increased mobility after receiving the new drugs treatments. Improving the quality of life for arthritis sufferers is a cause that unexpectedly hit close to home for Kinsey. The disease is so commonplace that its often brushed aside, Kinsey said, despite so many people suffering or not knowing they suffer from it.

Common Asthma Steroids Linked To Side Effects In Adrenal Glands | Fox News

San Francisco Salt Company Teams Up With the National Psoriasis Foundation for... -- SAN FRANCISCO, April 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --

Corticosteroids are man-made drugs designed to mimic the hormone cortisol, which the adrenal glands produce naturally. The drugs are usually used to counter inflammation in a wide range of conditions, including asthma, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, blood cancers and organ transplants. People with adrenal insufficiency do not make enough of two hormones, cortisol and aldosterone. Cortisol helps the body respond to stress, recover from infections and regulate blood pressure and metabolism.

Fumaderm, acquired by Biogen in 2006, accounted for $62 million of Biogen's $8.2 billion in 2014 product revenue. Biogen changed hands recently at $421.08, down 0.24 percent. In January, Bass, who runs Dallas-based Hayman Capital Management L.P., told an investment conference in Norway of plans to challenge pharmaceutical patents via a so-called Inter Partes Review process created by Congress in 2012. The process entails hearings before a U.S. Patent Office panel as a cheaper and faster alternative to court trials, and was formed to help fight patent trolls.

Aldosterone helps maintain the right amounts of salt, potassium and water in the body. While on steroids, the body often produces less of these hormones naturally, and after coming off the drugs it can take a while for natural production to ramp back up. The result is adrenal insufficiency, which can be treated with medication to replace cortisol or aldosterone. Dekkers and colleagues analyzed 74 research articles published from 1975 to 2014, covering a total of 3753 study participants, to see how different doses and types of corticosteroid treatment might impact the likelihood of developing adrenal insufficiency after treatment. Researchers found the risk of adrenal insufficiency was highest when corticosteroids were taken orally or injected, and lower with inhaled, nasal or topical treatment. When they looked just at patients using steroids for asthma, the researchers found that the risk of adrenal insufficiency was about 7 percent with inhaled corticosteroids, but about 44 percent with other formulations including oral inverse psoriasis pictures medication. Only about 2 percent of asthma patients on the lowest dose of steroids experienced adrenal insufficiency, compared with about 22 percent on the highest doses.

Oncology drugs will be under pricing pressure in 2015 as new immuno-oncology therapies enter the market. Nevertheless, we cautiously watch Novartis' efforts to realign its portfolio in order to focus on its core segments of pharmaceuticals, eye care and generics. We expect investor focus to remain on Cosentyxs progress and launch of LCZ696 upon a potential approval (launch expected from the third quarter). Meanwhile, Novartis has four immune-oncology molecules in its pipeline, which are scheduled to enter clinical stage later in the year including the checkpoint inhibitors PD-1, TIM-3 and LAG-3. Right now, Shire SHPG looks favorably placed in the etiology of psoriasis healthcare sector with a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). Want the latest recommendations from Zacks Investment Research?

That might limit the toxicity of the drug, and until it is tested, it's not clear that quick clearance would undermine the drug's performance against MRSA. "Remember that no one has ever tested niclosamide for treating bacterial infections," he said. If niclosamide, which is already used in humans for one purpose, can also help them fight off a superbug, or if its apparently more effective and less toxic cousin oxyclozanide can gain approval for human use, doctors could obtain much needed ammunition against MRSA. "The relatively mild toxicity of oxyclozanide is encouraging based on in vitro tests," Rajamuthiah said. "Since it has never been tested in humans and since it belongs to the same structural family as niclosamide, our findings give strong impetus to using oxyclozanide for further investigations." Particularly important is that because oxyclozanide attacks the cell membrane instead of metabolic pathways, it may be more difficult for MRSA to develop resistance, Rajamuthiah said. Mrsa Superbug May Get Stronger If You Smoke - Yahoo News

Laura Crotty Alexander, a pulmonologist at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, noticed that many of the patients she treated who were smokers had MRSA infections, and wondered whether there was a connection. Crotty Alexander and her colleagues at the University of California, San Diego, created two batches of MRSA in their lab one grown normally and the other grown with exposure to cigarette smoke. They then infected human immune cells called macrophages with each of these MRSA samples. Macrophages are a type of white blood cell, and are among the first line of defense to attack MRSA and other sources of infections. [ 6 Superbugs to Watch Out For ] The macrophages could kill both samples, but they had a much harder time killing the MRSA exposed to cigarette smoke.

Former kicker sues NFL's Buccaneers over MRSA infection - Yahoo Sports

Is University of Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota a better fit for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers than Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston? Board workers were at a West Side nursing home earlier this week to provide ballots to those who want to vote early when the woman with MRSA requested one, Kale-Pesta said. The woman voted the only race on her ballot is the Democratic primary for 4th Ward council and a nurse with her put the paper ballot in a plastic biohazard envelope sealed at the top, and gave it to election workers, Kale-Pesta said. Elections officials asked the county health department to open it, but health officials declined, Kale-Pesta said.

Ex-Bucs kicker suing team for $20M over career-ending MRSA infection - CBSSports.com

(USATSI) Former Buccaneers and Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes is suing the Bucs for $20 million in Broward County Court in Florida claiming MRSA ended his NFL career. The lawsuit, which essentially claims Tynes lost piles and piles of cash as a result of the Buccaneers lack of sanitary working conditions, is a "negligence and premises liability lawsuit" and was filed by the Podhurst Orseck and The Brad Sohn Law Firm in Broward County Circuit Court, the firm said in a release, via the Tampa Tribune . Tynes "seeks compensatory damages for [Tynes'] lost salary and substantial pain and suffering." The MRSA outbreak occurred in August of 2013 and affected three players: Tynes, guard Carl Hicks and (then-rookie) cornerback Johnthan Banks . Tynes and the NFLPA filed a grievance against the Bucs in October of 2013, alleging they mishandled his medical situation. Nicks' MRSA infection reappeared in October of 2013 , at which time Banks was diagnosed as well.

Lawrence Tynes sues Tampa Bay Buccaneers over MRSA infection | FOX Sports

Lawyer Stephen Rosenthal said Tynes contracted the infection in 2013 at the Buccaneers' training facility. The lawsuit filed late Monday in Broward County Circuit Court in Florida accuses the team of negligence for failing to suitably sanitize the facility to prevent the spread of the potentially fatal infection. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, is caused by a rare strain of staph bacteria resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary infections. Rosenthal told Reuters it would be "shocking" if the team was unaware of the risk of staph infections in a locker room setting.
